1 to 2 GB of Memory The bare minimum that a modern computer needs to run (as of this writing). You might be able to get away with this little memory if you use a 32-bit operating system and only do web browsing (without opening multiple tabs), email, and light word processing. This is not something we recommend for any of the systems we sell.
4 GB of Memory If your computer is primarily used for web browsing (multiple tabs are fine), e-mail, light Microsoft Office application work, light gaming, and streaming non-HD movies, 4 GB of memory is probably sufficient.
It is essential to be aware that your computer system can only access approximately 3.2GB of memory regardless if you are running a 32-bit operating system and have more ambitious plans for your PC. If you upgrade your memory beyond 4 GB of RAM, it will be of no use to you.
Only 64-bit operating systems are supported by any of our systems. A 64-bit operating system is required for modern computers to fully utilize technology. However, as always, we are primarily a computer builder who can tailor your configuration to meet your particular requirements. Please get in touch with us if you have a custom request.
8 GB of Memory If your PC's performance goals include intensive web browsing, HD streaming, heavy Office work, moderate gaming, image manipulation, multiple applications running simultaneously, multiple monitors, and so on, The use of 8GB of RAM then makes perfect sense. For most performance users, this is the ideal amount of memory. If your video is onboard and operates with shared memory, opting for 8GB of RAM is also wise.
16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB of Memory If you're using resource-intensive applications like CAD, Photoshop, video editing software, professional digital audio processing, 3D modeling, and intense gaming, you could really use 16GB or more of RAM. When you use these programs, you are more likely to experience smooth performance from your computer if it has more RAM available for them. If you want to improve performance in these applications, it may be more cost-effective to upgrade a different PC component—for example, from a hard disk drive to an SSD, to a motherboard with more system bus, or to a graphics processing unit—in some cases. In order to optimize your system for performance in your particular software, consult the recommendations provided by the manufacturer of the software. When using virtualization software, having at least 16 GB of memory is also helpful, and most servers can use more than 16 GB of memory.
